City Pages – A-List!

One week left to submit work to Crossing Borders

In Crossing Borders, Altered Esthetics’ February exhibit, artists  will explore how past and present immigration shapes our cultures, communities, and families.

For example, María Korol will feature “Father and Daughter”, from her series Colombian Paintings.

Colombian Paintings: The series of portraits I call the Colombian paintings were produced in the months of June and July 2010 in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. All the models are residents of a shantytown called Cazucá in the outskirts of the capital. Most of them have been displaced from the Colombian countryside by the civil war and have relocated in the slums. I met them at a non-profit organization called Tierra Viva, where I offered art workshops for children, youth, and women. – María Korol

The deadline for submitting work is December 15th, 2011. You can submit online easily by visiting the Open Calls page here: alteredesthetics.com/events/104/new_show_art

Rescue Me opens Friday!

For many of us at Altered Esthetics, the Rescue Me shows hit very close to home. Some of us are foster pet-parents while others have helped give our fuzzy children their permanent homes. This show was born out of our love of animals – and not just the beauty of animals in nature, but that special relationship humans have with the pets they care for.

When I think about our pets, I think about the environments they were in before they found a forever home with us. I didn’t grow up with dogs, but I couldn’t imagine life without them now! (Aside from the fact that I would have a cleaner house, that is. :) ) You receive so much love from an animal; love that is unconditional. And even though it’s me that’s given them a permanent home, I wonder if in less obvious ways, I’ve the one that has been rescued.

I was at the gallery today catching up on a few things and got to see a sneak preview of the show. While I worked I was surrounded by one of the most warming exhibits we’ve ever had, and some of the most thoughtful artwork. Perhaps that’s just because this area speaks to something I can really personalize… but I suppose that’s what we do. Art that connects.

I really hope you get a chance to make it for the show. If you’re an animal lover in any way, shape, or form – I think you’ll enjoy it.

The opening will be this Friday December 2nd from 7pm-10pm, and it will run until December 17th. I’ll be there and I hope to see you too!

Give to the Max Day is here!

Ae Board - Scaffolding

The Altered Esthetics Board

Happy Give to the Max Day!!!

The snow will soon be upon us as 2011 draws to a close. In the meantime, Altered Esthetics is very excited about our 2011 accomplishments…

  • Over 3,500 hours volunteered…. and counting!
  • Provided career training and solo shows for 10 emerging artists.
  • Hands on training for 13 interns in curatorial and nonprofit arts.
  • Hosted monthly drawing workshops and critiques.
  • 14 Group exhibitions – free to the public.
  • Over 500 artists served!

And we couldn’t have done any of it without your help.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

There are a few ways you can help as we prepare for next year:

Our board isn’t a rich one, but were VERY committed – and we’re also willing to put our money where our mouth is. Each board member already gives every year, and this year we’ve taken up a second giving mission. On Give to the Max day, the Ae board members are matching your contributions – up to $650. The match is in effect all day today (November 16th,) and you can find our page at: razoo.com/story/Altered-Esthetics.

Next year, we hope to expand our workshop offerings, creating more low-cost opportunities for artists. We are also refining the Solo Exhibitions program so emerging artists continue to receive the best training and service.

We will continue to focus on maintaining our gallery space and updating the tools that aid us in providing services to artists. Our brick-and-mortar location needs some care, as does our heavily trafficked website. We hope to make improvements to these next year so they remain professional, usable spaces, both on-line and in person!

On behalf of the Altered Esthetics board and the artists we serve, thank you for your continued help and support!

Creatively yours,
Jamie Schumacher

Founder & Development Director

Support a local arts org on Give to the Max Day – Nov 16!

GTMD Logo

The board of Altered Esthetics is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. And we keep with pretty awesome company here in the Twin Cities. The Altered Esthetics board volunteers and works with a number of other fantastic music and arts organizations, from the American Craft Council to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

On Give to the Max Day, we hope you’ll consider supporting some of your favorite charities. Here are  just a few of the awesome arts organizations our board members love, in addition to Ae of course. :)

Springboard for the Arts

The Twin Cities creative community wouldn’t be the same without Springboard for the Arts. Not only is everybody on staff there exceptional, their programs are invaluable! From health care for artists to career planning, we’re so lucky to have them around. You can find their giving page at: givemn.razoo.com/story/Springboard-For-The-Arts

Fiscally sponsored by Springboard and high on our list is Local Artist Interviews (LAI). LAI has been helping Altered Esthetics with artist interviews for the past year, which have added a really great component to our exhibitions and outreach. These interviews help give artists another voice out there for their work, and that should continue! You can find the Local Artist Interview giving page at:  givemn.razoo.com/story/Lai

The Soap Factory

Our Minneapolis neighbor, the Soap Factory, is an amazing and community-driven exhibitions space. In addition to fantastic shows, they also host a number of great events like  MIX and the Haunted Basement. We need great exhibition spaces like this in the Twin Cities! You can find their giving page here: givemn.razoo.com/story/The-Soap-Factory

Stepping Stone

SteppingStone Theatre’s mission is to “develop the whole child by using educational theatre programs and fully-staged productions to build self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of community, while celebrating diversity in a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere.” We think that’s a great cause to support! This organization does amazing things for youth, and you can find their page at: givemn.razoo.com/story/Sst-Saveoursteps

Northern Symphony Orchestra

What would a vibrant arts community be without theatre, art, and music? The Northern Symphony Orchestra has professional, amateur and semi-professional musicians sitting side by side making some of the best music in the Northern Twin Cities Metro area! You can find their Giving page here: givemn.razoo.com/story/Northern-Symphony-Orchestra

the Ae Board

Altered Esthetics

And of course, we’ll be donating to Altered Esthetics as well. Your tax deductible contribution will help keep our shows free to the public, our internship program vibrant, and our new solo exhibitions program professional and awesome. Our board isn’t a rich one, but were VERY committed – over 3,500 hours volunteered in 2011 so far and counting! We’re also willing to put our money where our mouth is. Each board member already gives every year, and this year we’ve taken up a second giving mission. On Give to the Max day, the Ae board members will match your contributions – up to $650. The match begins tonight at midnight and will go through until midnight tomorrow, and you can find our page at: razoo.com/story/Altered-Esthetics.

We hope you have fun participating in Give the Max Day! There are a lot of great organizations out there that could use your support.

Give wisely, give often!

:)
