Since the time I decided I wanted to take up photography, travel photography has been my secret favorite. My first real family trip, that I can remember, was out west one summer in the late 80’s. I have one whole roll of photos just of the petrified rock gardens. And ended up with many other random vacation photos, probably not of anything too exciting. I was 8, so to me it was the coolest! (My camera was pink, and used 110 film.) My dream job would be working for National Geographic Traveler. Getting paid to travel and take pictures while doing so? Yes, please! I’d try to expand my range to something other than petrified rocks, however. This particular photo is from a visit back to my hometown. It isn’t far from here, but it was still a mini-vacation from the “big city”. It was the weekend of July 4th, when people come from who knows where to camp on the islands in the river and just drink. And swim. And boat. And camp, of course. This was one of those rare, quiet moments between parties on the islands and boats. Just before the sun was about to go down, campfires creating so much smoke it seemed as if it were foggy. The water was as still as it could be for the weekend.
