My work in ceramics has developed concurrently, over the span of several years, with my interest in voluntary alterations of the body. The figures that I create reflect specific moments of personal experience, either directly through their interactions with one another, or indirectly as emotional representations. Their skin is marked by scars and wounds; their sense of helplessness heightened by immobility and an inability to exist or function alone. These alterations capture the complexity of the suspension and modification process, which in turn reflects the currents of daily life – the beauty and elegance perfectly at home with the awkward and painful, the violence of injury tempered by moments of stillness and quiet reflection, highly personal moments achievable only with others assistance.
