I am submitting this painting alongside a digital photo of my father's (Zeph Van Allen). Both pieces are using imagery of nature. This painting is part of a series of works in which I am exploring questions surrounding the notion of the end of the world. Both words "end" and "world" have many meanings, yet they come together as we face such themes as war, rapid environmental destruction, and societal degradation. While the subject is overwhelming and perhaps unsettling, this piece is somewhat calm and peaceful.
