I have used the abstract organic form of clay to represent the natural state of being; clay surfaces are worked, textured, worn and bisque fired, a variety of stains are hand rubbed onto the surface and a volcanic ash glaze is applied. The work is then fired at temperature ranging from cone 04 to cone 5. Individual pieces may be fired several times to achieve the desired effect of color and surface finish. The impositions of wire, fibers of silk, wool and viscose interject upon the piece as individually as we interject our society upon the landscape, or the beliefs of the powerful are imposed upon the disempowered. In this work I explore the question whether such impositions can ever result in some synergistic relationship.
