Homage to Favorite Female Artist The idea for this piece came very easily. Frida Kahlo is without a doubt my favorite artist. She faced many obstacles in her lifetime but was held back by none as she was resilient, strong and in her own way very beautiful. She fought for what she believed in, did not accept no for an answer and painted with all that she was. She did not just paint “pretty” pictures. She painted life and how the joy and pain of it affected her. Without Frida Kahlo I do not believe women artists would be taken as serous as they are today…although I still believe society has some catching up to go! She inspires me to paint to make a difference in the world; she inspires me to be a great woman artist just like she was. Painting because it was in her blood, because she had to, because she needed to, because it was her therapy, it gave her purpose and in turn she has and will affect generations of men and women artists for years to come. This piece is based on one of Frida’s originals. Her heart is open and the veins running from it are connecting to different ovals that contain people and or events that have effected her as a person and an artist. I decided to place other poignant female artists that I admire in these ovals. This painting is a tribute to Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’keefe, Judy Chicago,Faith Rinngold, Mariam Shapiro, and Syvia Hyman.
