I have been exploring a relationship between figurative and abstraction in my painting as a way to bring together several elements. On the one hand, I have a love for form and the figure and am compelled to celebrate this on canvas. But also, I was fortunate to have been able to pursue my own direction while under the influence of two wonderful abstract painters in New York City. A heightened appreciation for colour, paint manipulation, and working from instinct entered my work because of it. Bringing these two realms into union has been my passion for the last several years. This series is taking me back to working more from the unconsciousness and yielding to child-like probings. The tricycle motif is worked from a family photograph of my sister and I as children. This motif further accentuates giving up order and preconception to allow natural and naïve impulse to "steer the way." The small size of the panels helps to broaden this idea also.
