It is to Eve that western theology attributes the first 'sin', that of eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Genesis honors that symbolic act as the seed of human consciousness. It is this knowledge of good and evil that allows both cruelty and compassion to exist in the human race and gives us the opportunity to choose between them.
