Different Spokes
Chicago Bicycle Messengers
GARY STEPHEN HOPMAYER (Passaic, NJ, 1940 - ) is a student-at-large in the photography program at Columbia College Chicago and is Vice Chair of the college's Board of Trustees.
A continuous path of learning inspires my photography. Acquiring knowledge, hearing thought-provoking images, and attempting to capture "perfect" moments are my study tools. The human interaction I encounter as a photographer provides new discoveries that lead to a more reflective insight into my photography.
Guided by these influences, I have created Different Spokes - strong, distinctive portraits imbued with an activist human element that is the DNA of a Chicago bicycle messenger. Urban, counterculture, weatherproof bike enthusiasts. American mavericks living on the edge of the system, with each image, their captivating eyes have the potential to reveal "something" about the spirit of the subject.
I bring to my work a sense of social anxiety - a "discomfort zone." Stepping into unfamiliar, potentially ominous worlds, I become an alien invading someone's personal space. Hearing anxious voices inside me, I abate some level of this noise and expand my ability to "see."
